These little units are really impressive. These have been fitted to the Smart Tri until Danie has finished developing the ‘real’ ones for the Smart Tri. At the moment, the Torqueedos generate 2kW each which is enough to easily push the 40′ Smart Tri up to 6 – 8 knots. Once the real drives are finished it should raise total power to 6 – 8 kW and that will be a big difference.
The smart thing about the Smart is doing away with a ‘main engine’ for propulsion. Inside under the forward vee-berth is a decent sized generator. This provides more than enough current for the water boiling system, the microwave, the electric toilet, the water maker and… AIR CONDITIONING. The batteries get topped up and you can run the Torqueedos for at least an hour under batteries alone. The system works great and it is definitely the way forward for boating.
More on the other systems later… Got to go sailing now…
